All Hail The Queen

THERE SHE IS…

For the last month and a half, I’ve introduced you to all 19 young women competing for the title of Miss Nebraska in LESS THAN THREE WEEKS.

HUNDREDS of hours of service. THOUSANDS of dollars raised for charity.

Most, if not all of these women, told me how much they’ve grown as people by participating in the Miss America Organization. You can see it in their pictures; the smiles on their faces as little girls proudly wear their crowns. Side by side with children and adults alike, who for a moment, felt extra special. Performing on stage in front of hundreds, cheered on by the people who love them most. THOSE are the moments that make all of this incomparable.

But behind the scenes, THIS IS WORK. These women, especially in these final weeks leading up to Miss Nebraska, ARE WORKING THEIR TAILS OFF to be the absolute BEST they can be for this competition. In the studio. In the gym. They are making sure they are as aware as possible of the world around them and fine tuning their public speaking skills. IT’S GO TIME.

At the end of the day, is it all worth it? The countless hours serving without a paycheck. The scratchy throats, sore muscles and tired fingers with the risk of no crown at the end. The stress of juggling school.. and jobs.. and duties as a local titleholder. Is it all worth it?

This young woman says ABSOLUTELY.

Miss Nebraska 2013 JaCee Pilkington

One year ago, I compiled a slideshow for KETV.com showcasing the Miss Nebraska contestants. I asked each woman to send me her favorite photos and things about herself she wanted our viewers and readers to know. JaCee was among the first to respond to me. Her answers were articulate, her goals clear. She was DETERMINED to become Miss Nebraska.

“Being Miss Nebraska is by far the most challenging yet rewarding experience I’ve ever had in my life,” JaCee told me recently. “Although many have a skewed view of what being Miss Nebraska is really like, it is first and foremost a job. I managed to put 50,000 miles on my car and traveled everywhere from Valentine to McCook, and Scottsbluff to Omaha. I’ve made it my goal to touch as many individuals across this state as I possibly can.”

Did she accomplish that? See for yourself.

JaCee invited me to check out her Facebook page and choose whichever photos I liked best. WHAT YOU SEE DOES NOT EVEN SCRATCH THE SURFACE. There are literally hundreds of pictures, snapshots of countless moments in schools, at events, with one child or 500, smiling, offering hugs, the list goes on and on and on.

“Whether it was through my platform [Operation Remember Me], the Children’s Miracle Network, or the Miss Nebraska Organization as a whole, I wanted to make this year about seeing Miss Nebraska as a real, tangible, down-to-Earth girl,” said JaCee.

JaCee says travel has been the best part of her job, learning what makes the state so special. (“Wilber is Czech, Stromsburg is Swede, and O’Neill is Irish. Just a little Nebraska trivia for you,” said JaCee.) One of her most exciting trips came in September, when JaCee traveled to Atlantic City to represent Nebraska at the Miss America pageant.

“Miss America was such a surreal experience,” said JaCee. “I gained 51 other sisters away from the experience and friendships that will last. My favorite moment in particular was singing my talent on the Miss America stage. You hit that last note and look out and think, ‘Dang, this is so freaking cool.’ It was almost two weeks filled with excitement, anxiety, stress, and happiness all at the same time. I’m also elated to know the Miss America Organization is evolving as we’ve now crowned our first Indian American Miss America.”

SO LET’S SUM UP… months preparing for Miss Nebraska, then winning Miss Nebraska. Three short months preparing for Miss America, then competing at Miss America. What next?!?!

EVERYTHING.

“Miss Nebraska is by far the hardest yet most rewarding job I’ve ever held,” said JaCee. “You are driving a majority of the time, by yourself, to an appearance that you just learned the name of last night. You are constantly adapting to the environment around you. Heck, one week I had to [revise] one speech, six different ways, in one week to fit each appearance. Although the job can be difficult at times, it is what you make it. You can be doing an appearance literally every day of the week if you want to be. However, it is your responsibility to put yourself out there, network your butt off, and make it happen. Nobody will do that for you.”

It will truly be the end of an era on June 7, when JaCee crowns the next Miss Nebraska. She’s not only served our state for the last year, she also served as Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen 2009.

“I’m feeling very content at this point,” said JaCee. “It is sad, don’t get me wrong. Who wouldn’t want to say they’re Miss Nebraska? I am excited to be moving on to the next chapter in my life, though. Right after I give up my crown I will be heading to Mexico to serve on a mission trip. Later I will continue to finish my degree at Doane College with hopes to continue in public policy and the business consulting world.”

Could we see Senator Pilkington down the road? (Prior to becoming Miss Nebraska, JaCee worked for Senator Mike Johanns and continues to stay active in local politics.)

“I view Nebraska in a completely different light now,” said JaCee. “To be honest, when I graduated the first place I was headed was DC. Now, I realize the opportunity Nebraska has to offer. You can make an incredible impact within this state and I cannot see myself anywhere else at this point.”

JaCee’s got good reason to stay close to home; her little sister, JaLee, just graduated high school, she’s got a sweet puppy at home to look after, and yes, gentlemen, she’s got a boyfriend.

She’s got one more big trip on her schedule; to hand off her crown to the next Miss Nebraska.

“I mainly want people to know how relevant and impactful the job of Miss Nebraska really is,” said JaCee. “I understand that many already have preconceived notions about ‘beauty pageants’ but I can assure you that she’s more than a pretty face. The women who compete in this organization are extremely driven, hard-working, intelligent, and compassionate individuals who are looking to make a difference in this world. I pray that whoever is blessed with this opportunity this coming month will take full advantage of all it has to offer: the connections, opportunities, and lives that can be changed.”

“Who is Amanda Soltero.. and how do I meet her??”

Ladies and gentlemen, THIS is Amanda Soltero, Miss Nebraska USA 2014

..and NOW you know why my friend asked to meet her.

Jaw. Dropping. GORGEOUS. If ever there was a time for me to write a blog using only photos, this would be it.

STUNNING: adj. To astonish; astound; amaze: Her beauty stunned the audience.

Believe it or not, Amanda seems to be just as beautiful, if not more so, on the INSIDE. The same weekend young women from across the state will compete for the title of Miss Nebraska, Amanda will be competing in Baton Rouge for the title of Miss USA. Today in a special feature, get to know Miss Nebraska USA, and find out why she wants your support representing our state.

First things first.. what’s the difference between Miss America and Miss USA? I think my fellow KETV anchor and pageant-graduate
Alex Hoffman put it best in saying these two organizations are the most prestigious, well known and respected in the pageant world. They are televised, have history on their side, and have thousands of participants nationwide. While many of the same young women compete for both, they are two different systems.

The Miss America Organization is a not-for-profit organization; The Miss USA/Miss Universe organization is a joint venture partnership between NBC and Donald Trump.

Women who compete for Miss America must be 17-24 years old; women who compete for Miss USA must be between 17-27 years old.

Finally, Miss America contestants compete in swimsuit, evening gown, interview and talent; Miss USA contestants do not compete in talent.

Enough with the facts and figures… meet Amanda!

“I am determined to use my year to make a difference in people’s lives, especially children with cancer,” Amanda told me in a recent interview. “You get one year to be Miss Nebraska USA and even though I come from a small town (Columbus, Neb.), I know I can still make a big difference by using my title to do so! I want to show my state that I can make them proud by representing them in the best way and by truly making the most of my time with the crown, not just for all the glitz and glam.”

Just as each of the Miss Nebraska contestants have a personal platform of service, Amanda is focusing her year on spreading awareness of childhood cancer.

“Pediatric cancer research and awareness is very near and dear to my heart,” said Amanda. “6-year old Sammy Nahorny is a family friend of mine and when they started Sammy’s Superheroes, I knew I wanted to get involved.”

Sammy was diagnosed at 4-years old with Neuroblastoma, cancer that commonly affects the abdomen and adrenal glands and is very difficult to treat. Loved ones formed Sammy’s Superheroes to show their support and raise money for research; more than 10,000 people now support the cause, including Olympic Gold Medalist Curt Tomasevicz. “When you see directly the effects childhood cancer can have on someone you care about, it really hits you hard and makes you want to help in any way that you can,” said Amanda. “I knew that if I won Miss Nebraska USA, I would be able to give a larger platform for Sammy’s Superheroes and really get the word out how desperately funds are needed for research to find a cure.”

Amanda has also offered her support and time to Team Jack, the organization raising money to fight pediatric brain cancer in honor of Jack Hoffman. Jack and his dad, Andy, are good friends to KETV, sharing their story of Jack’s long battle with a brain tumor, his friendship with Nebraska football player Rex Burkhead, and the now legendary Spring Game touchdown run viewed more than 8.4 million times on YouTube.

I, too, have had the privilege of sharing Jack’s story, and the fight he represents. Team Jack has now raised more than 1.1 million dollars for pediatric brain cancer research, and has the support of tens of thousands across the country.

“I know that the more people that hear and see where their money is going, the quicker we can find a cure!” said Amanda.

It is THIS, not the fancy photo shoots or glamorous trips around the country, that Amanda enjoys the most about being Miss Nebraska USA.

“The appearances I have gotten to do WITH Sammy have had the most impact on me and have been the most meaningful,” said Amanda.

While many state titleholders take a year off from school and full time work to focus on service and appearances, Amanda has not; she remains a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and will graduate this weekend with a degree in Broadcasting.

But make no mistake; Amanda says she is ready to represent Nebraska at Miss USA.

“I want to make the people of my home state proud and go out knowing that I did everything I possibly could to prepare and leave no stone unturned,” said Amanda. “I want to be a platform for the organizations that mean the most to me, and get others on board as well. I want to represent myself, my family and my state in the best light possible.”

Amanda will fly to Louisiana on May 25th, but she’s hoping to take Nebraska with her. You can watch the Miss USA pageant live on NBC June 8th at 8/7 Central, hopefully cheering loud enough that Amanda will be able to hear you 1,000 miles away.

“My hopes for the pageant are to show the world what Nebraskans are made of and to let people know there is more to Nebraska than cornfields and flat land,” said Amanda.

And there’s more to Amanda than a pretty face. This young woman is reshaping how children, families and Nebraskans think of ‘beauty queens’. Beauty INSIDE and out.

The Kid Whisperer

The Kid Whisperer… wow, that sounds like an AWESOME reality show.

‘You’ve seen the Dog Whisperer.. You loved SuperNanny… now meet, THE KID WHISPERER! SHHHHHH!!!!’

I’d DVR that.

Here’s the show’s premise: a beautiful young lady who makes miracles happen through her love of working with and being around children. Her name?

Miss Eastern Nebraska, Alyssa Howell

Children are Alyssa’s focus during her year as Miss Eastern Nebraska and they are her future; the Creighton University student plans to become a Child Life Specialist for the Children’s Miracle Network, working in facilities helping patients and families navigate the challenges of childhood illnesses and hospitalization.

“When I made my first onsite visit to a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital at age 15, I knew that was where I could make the largest and most meaningful impact,” said Alyssa in a recent interview. “Ever since, I have been working towards raising awareness, fundraising, but most importantly, interacting with patients to make their days a little brighter.”

“My family and friends call me the Kid Whisperer!” said Alyssa.

CHARISMATIC, PASSIONATE, FUN!

Children’s Miracle Network is Miss America’s community partner, so it made perfect sense to Alyssa to tie in her passion with competing for Miss Nebraska.

“The Miss America Organization is one of the most outstanding programs for young women in the world,” said Alyssa. “It is the place where I feel I can do the most for my community through the emphasis of service, learn and grow as a person, and most of all, have fun while meeting new people and enhancing my interview and performance skills! Young women are valued and rewarded in this organization for excelling as leaders in education, service, the arts and living healthy lives – that’s important to me.”

Alyssa also respects the tradition involved with the Miss America Organization, even the more controversial aspects, like Lifestyle and Fitness. Alyssa notes the entire system started as a swimsuit competition in Atlantic City in 1921.

“The swimsuit competition is such a rich part of Miss America’s history and should be embraced,” said Alyssa. “Aside from that, swimsuit is a great way to encourage proper nutrition, fitness and self-confidence. Truly, the judges are looking for a healthy girl, one that has good muscle tone and body shape, not just a skinny girl.”

Alyssa goes as far to say most contestants have fun strutting their stuff! Still, she says, Interview is her favorite aspect of the competition.

“It allows you to interact with the judges in a one-on-one environment,” said Alyssa. “I love being able to tell my story, express why I am there and most of all, meet some pretty amazing people!”

No doubt some of her tiniest friends may come up in Alyssa’s interview. She’ll be advocating for them right up until her trip to North Platte, even hosting an online fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network on Friday, May 9th. From 5-8 pm, Alyssa hopes to raise $1000. Find out more by heading to her event website.

Alyssa’s reality TV debut may have to wait. After all, she’s already earned the title of Kid Whisperer.

Now she’s aiming for Miss Nebraska.

Making Noise

Every single one of the young women competing for Miss Nebraska has a voice, a message they want as many people as possible to listen to.

Today’s featured contestant is working extra hard, because the same people she is trying to help CANNOT always hear her.

Miss Metro, Kimberly Brennan

Kimberly is nearly deaf in her left ear. A virus, contracted when she was 14, stole her hearing. A virus that was not diagnosed for several weeks, despite Kimberly’s complaints about ringing in her ear and an inability to hear things clearly.

“It took an ENT five minutes to diagnose a virus in my ear. If I had only known weeks earlier, my hearing could have been saved,” said Kimberly in a recent interview. “I want to share my story and take the message of hearing loss prevention on a state and national level because I don’t want others to risk this same fate.”

Kimberly now travels to schools and other groups sharing her story. She also hands out earplugs and has plans to ‘take on’ companies that produce products like ear buds to make listening devices safer.

“With the ever growing prevalence of noise induced hearing loss, now is the perfect time to take on the issue,” said Kimberly. “The answer lies mainly in providing the knowledge.”

PASSIONATE, COMPASSIONATE, GENUINE

Kimberly’s explanation behind her personal platform is only a glimpse of the passion she has for her roles, not just as Miss Metro, but as ‘Miss Brennan’. Kimberly graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha and has been accepted into the CADRE Masters of Education program, where she plans to obtain her Master’s Degree in education WHILE teaching full-time.

“Student teaching was a high point in my educational career,” said Kimberly. “I loved and was energized by teaching students each day and dedicating myself to helping them learn and grow.”

Kimberly also spends about 21 hours a week teaching baton at Sue’s Stepperettes, where she became a national and world champion despite her hearing loss. She still trains there several hours a week.

“Imagine trying to throw a baton, jump, spin and balance, all while having the balance on one side of your body minimized,” said Kimberly. “It took a lot of hard work and perseverance to regain the balance that I had; winning [those titles] have been some of the proudest moments of my life so far, because I had to work so hard to get there.”

Kimberly will compete for Miss Nebraska side by side with her fellow baton twirlers Miss River City Rachel Foehlinger and Miss State Fair Aleah Peters.

No matter where she’s teaching, speaking, or twirling, Kimberly says she tries to show every person and group she cares about them.

“I want them to do well, I want them to accomplish great things and I want them to feel cared for,” said Kimberly. “I try to talk to everyone I meet and I take a genuine interest in them. I am truly fascinated by the things you can learn simply by talking to people you come across.”

That passion fuels Kimberly’s desire to serve others.

“I never feel better than when I am volunteering my time with others,” said Kimberly. “I have had amazing opportunities to help by raising money, plunging in freezing cold water, reading to children at libraries and schools, speaking about hearing loss, passing out ear plugs, dancing, greeting people, running bid boards, doing arts and crafts, modeling, all while taking about a million photos to commemorate the life changing experiences! I’m always looking for more opportunities to serve others, so PLEASE feel free to contact me if you know of any place that could use volunteers!”

Need proof? I spotted Kimberly THREE TIMES in the April issue of Metro Magazine, volunteering or making appearances at events in the Omaha area. In every photo, she is flashing a warm, welcoming smile.

“What you see is what you get. I am proud of who I am and what I have accomplished so far in my life,” said Kimberly. “I am confident in the fact that I am compassionate, passionate, dedicated, loving, caring, hard working, reflective, helpful, confident and intelligent. But I also accept the face that I have lazy days sometimes, that I can procrastinate, that I over-schedule myself, that I have a sweet tooth and that I can be impatient. We all have our negative qualities, but we need to be willing to embrace them and to better ourselves each day by serving others and gaining knowledge about anything and everything that strikes our fancy.”

Kimberly says the Miss America Organization highlights the positive, making the pageant still relevant in 2014.

“Turn to mass media and I bet you can find multiple stories about violence, celebrity happenings, people with eating disorders, and tragedies that happen every day,” said Kimberly. “While there are some positive stories about people who are doing great things and fighting to make a change, they are far fewer than those that are disheartening and discouraging. That is where the Miss America and Miss Nebraska pageants shine. These contestants are women who are actually doing something about these problems. They are women who are willing to put themselves out there and work like crazy to have a positive impact on the world.”

Kimberly’s out there, alright. Trying to make people hear her story, on behalf of those who can’t.

She’s ready to make some noise at Miss Nebraska.

Going The Extra Mile

Two of my coworkers ran marathons this morning.

I’m going to give you a minute to let that sink in…

TWO OF MY COWORKERS RAN MARATHONS THIS MORNING. Yea, as I was prying my booty off the floor to get a second cup of half coffee/half Coffeemate, Alex Hoffman and Amanda Crawford were RUNNING MARATHONS. 26.2 miles.

Beauties, I bow down to you!! AMAZING!!!

These women are just magnificent. As athletes, as journalists, as PEOPLE.

Alex is our fantastic First News anchor with John Oakey, and if you haven’t checked them out, IT’S AN ABSOLUTE MUST. DVR them if you’re not up that early. Their energy is contagious–they deliver the days news with a smile and positive attitude, despite getting up around 2am (or earlier!) to get to work on time for that early morning shift. Check out Alex’s Facebook page; you can truly see how much they enjoy their jobs and working together.

Everything I just said about Alex… DITTO FOR MISS AMANDA! Amanda is our First News Weekend Anchor with David Earl, and she ALSO is articulate, stunning, and energetic despite pulling into the Newsplex before some of us even go to bed for the night. Amanda always has a way of making ME smile at home; no easy task before coffee on an early weekend morning 🙂

Both of these young women can also DELIVER when it comes to serious news. When the International Nutrition building exploded and collapses, Alex anchored our continuous coverage while Amanda reported from the field. They were incredible. Folks, it is no easy task to just talk.. for hours.. not knowing what will happen next. They presented the story without any added drama or superlatives, so important as journalists on such a tragic day. They were articulate and informative, trustworthy and empathetic. They made me very proud to be part of the same team.

Outside the Newsplex, I just love these ladies. Alex and I play softball together (and FYI.. just 36 hours before she ran this half-marathon, SHE SMACKED A DOUBLE past the outfielders heads Friday night..), and have a love/obsession with Miss America. Amanda and I had bond over country music and gymnastics. We love them.. maybe a little too much 🙂

These women are just incredible. They run MARATHONS for crying out loud (Amanda reported every few miles during hers!! How is that possible?!?!?)

Now, I’d like to introduce you to two other incredible women you may not know. The ‘cheerleaders’ if you will, here at KETV.

Producers Kelly Shoff and Renee Ludvik

These women ‘make the magic happen’ so to speak. All day they are busy gathering information, making phone calls, and writing the newscasts we present to you at night. When something bad happens behind the scenes, it’s their job to rearrange all the pieces so you at home never know. 9 times out of 10, you don’t; they’re that good.

Perfect example: Thursday afternoon, something within our system crashed and we lost all of our commercials. Technology isn’t perfect–it happens. Did you have any idea?? PROBABLY NOT, because Renee rearranged her newscast, kept Melissa and Adrian in the loop through their earpieces as to what was going on, while Kelly managed a team to quickly find other stories from our sister stations around the country to fill the time void. It was truly incredible to see these ladies in action. SEAMLESS.

Renee started out just like me here at KETV–an intern who worked her tail off and earned a full-time job. She’s worked literally every shift we have here at KETV and has become an incredible producer. When breaking news happens, Renee is A SEA OF CALM, confident, she gets it DONE. And when someone calls in sick or takes vacation, Renee is often the one who steps up to the plate to fill in someone else’s shift.

When that horrible day at Von Maur happened in December 2007, Kelly stepped into the producer’s box. I don’t have any idea how many hours she was up there, with no break, producing our coverage on air. She handled phone interviews, live reporters, video, new information… EVERYTHING.

But there’s more to Kelly and Renee then their loyalty and incredible work ethic here at KETV. Look at their smiles in those photos–their INNER beauty just shining through. These women are ALWAYS the first to tell coworkers that they look nice. That they enjoyed their story the night before. They take the time, even when they are crazy-busy, to watch video of your kids doing something cute. They LISTEN. These are the people who make a day worthwhile, the cheerleaders who make you take a breath and say ‘it’s going to be a good day.’

I am in AWE of the amazing accomplishments I see in my coworkers everyday here at KETV. But I am equally blown away by, and am SO grateful for, positive energy and just plain KINDNESS. As great as it is to feel a sense of accomplishment, it is WONDERFUL to get a compliment on that, whatever it might be.

SO THANK YOU Alex, Amanda, Kelly and Renee. For inspiring me to run a little further (or at all!) and to go the extra mile to try to make a difference in someone’s day.

How Do You Like Me Now?

This is my 9th feature on this year’s Miss Nebraska contestants, and I feel like with every profile I write and the pictures I post, I think, ‘WOW, this girl is just BEAUTIFUL!’ It’s hard to imagine a time in any of their lives when they were picked on, targeted, or felt sadness because of someone else’s words against them.

Not the case.

In so many of these interviews, these women have revealed moments in their past in which they were bullied for a variety of reasons. Kids can be cruel; even more so in today’s age of social media, when it’s so very easy to tweet or post something mean about someone behind the shield of the internet.

This young lady is taking on the bullies, and showing everyone who feels alone that THIS is who you can become.

THAT SMILE. From the moment I met Aleah, that has been something that is always there, in every picture, in every moment she’s on stage, and whenever you are around her in person. THAT SMILE. Little did I know before our interview, it hasn’t always been there.

“When I was in high school I was bullied by a group of girls,” said Aleah in a recent interview. “I feared going to school, attending sporting events or even answering my phone. Since then I have realized that this is a problem that has affected, or will affect, everyone. Whether a person experiences being the victim, the bully, or a bystander, it is important that we stand up for change.”

Aleah is taking her message, dubbed ‘Stand for the Silent, Anti-Bullying’ to kids across the state of Nebraska.

“I have learned so much from each person I have met throughout my year,” said Aleah. “This position allows me to be a role model to kids of all ages and a contributing member in my community. Wearing a crown and sash gives me credibility and the chance to make a difference.”

Aleah is also raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network, Miss America’s community partner. She recently organized the ‘Miss Valentine’ pageant, drawing more than 40 little girls. Each child was treated to hair and makeup pampering, then participated in an opening number dance, modeling and an interview. Every girl was recognized for something she did well in; the event raised more than $2,000 for the charity.

“The girls had a wonderful time!” said Aleah. “The event was a huge success!”

DRIVEN, EXUBERANT, COMPASSIONATE

“I genuinely care for the people around me,” said Aleah. “I always try to make somebody’s day a little bit brighter.”

Those qualities helped Aleah finish as 1st runner-up in the Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen competition in 2010. After graduating from Millard South High School, she decided to compete for Miss Nebraska. While she says she enjoys all areas of the competition, Interview is her favorite.

“This part of the competition allows me to show the judges who I really am past all of the glamorous gowns, fit bodies and flashy talent,” said Aleah. “Interview sets each individual apart from each other because we are all so different.”

Aleah also has plenty of practice for the Talent portion of the competition; she works at Sue’s Stepperettes in Omaha, where she has twirled baton for years along with fellow contestants Miss River City Rachel Foehlinger and Miss Metro Kim Brennan. As for Lifestyle and Fitness, or swimsuit competition, Aleah believes it should remain part of the Miss America system.

“The goal of the organization is to help women become the best version of themselves in all areas of their life including fitness,” said Aleah. “This area of competition has helped me develop self-confidence and realize the importance of living a healthy life.”

In Aleah’s case.. healthy AND happy. Did I mention her awesome smile?

I can’t help but hope those girls who were mean to her so many years ago see this post, or see Aleah’s picture and achievements, and someday teach their kids to be kinder than they were. If I WERE Aleah, I’d be dancing in my bedroom, singing to Toby Keith’s ‘How Do You Like Me Now?’ at the top of my lungs.

I’m guessing Aleah doesn’t do that. She doesn’t need to, when she can make little girls smile just like her.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away….

I competed in the Miss Nebraska pageant. Many moons and many pounds ago.

I loved performing on stage and speaking about issues and causes I believe in. I will also never forget the amazing show of support I had from my family, friends and even strangers throughout the two years I competed.

Before Miss Nebraska 2002, a sweet little girl approached me with a neon green poster she had created just for me–it warmed my heart, especially considering her older sister was competing, too. That little girl’s name was Rachel.

This year, SHE is competing for the title of Miss Nebraska 2014.

Miss River City Rachel Foehlinger

Rachel has been part of the Miss Nebraska family for more than a decade. Both of her older sisters, Tina and Tami Foehlinger, competed in the Miss Nebraska pageant in 2001 and 2002 respectively, and Tina went on to represent Nebraska in the Miss America pageant, named as a Top-20 semi-finalist. Rachel was just 9 at the time.

“There are no words for the impact this had on me,” Rachel told me in a recent interview. “Not only was I in awe of what she had accomplished, along with all of the other contestants, I was in love with the organization and everything it stood for. I looked at those young women on the stage and said to myself I want to be just like them when I get older.”

Rachel went on to become Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen in 2008. Her journey continues now as Miss River City, representing the Omaha metro area along with her ‘pageant sisters’ Miss Omaha Payton Merritt and Miss Douglas County Megan Swanson. Her history with the Miss America organization has made her a passionate advocate for the system and the women who participate in it.

“Never before has there been such a need for genuinely positive role models, which is exactly how I would describe the women I have met through the Miss America Organization,” said Rachel. “I have already grown so much just by competing that I will be forever thankful to have been involved with this organization, whether I walk away with the crown or not.”

PASSIONATE, STRONG, FUN!

Rachel is no stranger to pressure or to the spotlight. She is a world champion baton twirler with Sue’s Stepperettes in Ralston, which is owned by her mother, Sue Foehlinger. Rachel has not only competed and performed since she was old enough to hold a baton, she has watched generations of twirlers train at her family’s studio and around the world. KETV showcased Sue’s Stepperettes when they celebrated 40 years in May of 2013. Two other Miss Nebraska contestants, Miss Metro Kim Brennan and Miss State Fair Aleah Peters, are also Stepperettes.

That legacy has earned the Stepperettes notoriety and respect around the world, even drawing local sports guys in to try and learn the art of the baton. Rachel was on TV again in July of 2011, trying to teach KETV’s Andy Kendeigh how to twirl.. without hurting himself or others 🙂

Rachel made a name for herself several years ago, named as the Featured Twirler for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. She performed every Saturday during football season in front of 80,000 plus football fans, the fourth Foehlinger sibling to twirl for the University of Nebraska. Omaha World Herald columnist Mike Kelly chronicled their run before Rachel’s last home game in November.

“I have spent my entire life dedicating myself to the sport that has given me the drive to succeed individually as well as part of a team,” said Rachel. “I feel blessed beyond belief to be able to share my talent on the Miss Nebraska stage!”

As Miss River City, Rachel is also sharing a personal message, spreading awareness of skin cancer. Both Rachel’s uncle and cousin died from melanoma.

“Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer in the United States. At the current rate, one person dies from melanoma every hour,” said Rachel. “I spend every day thinking of ways to get the word out it CAN happen to anyone.”

Rachel says she’s involved in several efforts to raise awareness, including a recently launched campaign called #TheBedIsDead, encouraging people to avoid tanning beds.

Rachel is also a student liaison for the Nebraska Skin Cancer Prevention Act, recently passed by the Nebraska Legislature requiring anyone under the age of 16 have parental permission before using a tanning bed.

“My part in both of these campaigns is to spread awareness to youth, high school students and colleges,” said Rachel. “So many of us have an ‘it won’t happen to me’ attitude. This is a dangerous attitude, because once you get melanoma, you can never turn back.”

It’s truly amazing how life comes full circle. That 12 years after a sweet little brunette presented me with a poster she made, wishing me luck at Miss Nebraska, I would be BLOGGING about her journey for the same title. That ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ played when Tina Foehlinger competed for and won Miss Nebraska, and Miss River City Rachel Foehlinger will be competing for the same title in June.

Fate? Who knows. A dream? Absolutely. Rachel’s ready to bring the crown back home.. and maybe her own poster made by another sweet, little girl.

“You learn to ignore it as much as you possibly can, but everyone’s human. Its going to affect you a little bit.”

Part of me thinks it’s kind of ridiculous to think I have ANYTHING in common with a guy like Bo Pelini. But when he said this in our interview recently, and especially when I later listened to our interview and really thought about these words, I thought, ‘PREACH, COACH!’

Much like Pelini, many of us in TV News understood and tried to accept that by putting ourselves out there every night.. or morning.. or weekend morning.. we would encounter criticism, and a lot of it. After 13 years in this business, I feel like my skin is FINALLY thick enough I don’t take home, or take to heart, the insults about my lipstick, hair, etc… and I’m so grateful that we have a great deal more WONDERFUL viewers who boost our egos with amazing compliments. However, there are days, like today, when it’s too much.

An anonymous, insulting email about a coworker. Hurtful comments about the people I interview, willing to put themselves out there to share their stories.

I drove home for dinner tonight FURIOUS. I think my blood was truly boiling. I cranked up my stereo, rolled down my windows, and tried to breathe.

I also reached a conclusion, a solution. One that won’t stop the negatives.. because in this world of Facebook, Twitter, emails, chatboards… it will NEVER stop. But maybe, MAYBE this will help. Even a little bit.

I’ll fight the negative, with positive.

MELISSA

If we could clone people, I would clone Melissa Fry. She is AMAZING. MAGNIFICENT. I don’t have enough adjectives. She is smart, SUCH a hard worker, and just an incredible person. Melissa is a fantastic anchor, a truly caring and gifted storyteller, and she lights up our entire newsroom when she is here. She just GLOWS. In a business where it’s so easy to be competitive, to make enemies and develop rivalries, I think it’s truly special and representative of her character to say she is arguably my best friend here. We are SO very lucky to have Melissa Fry on our team.

KRISTYNA

I. Heart. Kristyna Engdahl. She makes me laugh every single day. She is a GREAT reporter and writer. She works fast but her work isn’t sacrificed in the process. She’s succinct and articulate when she’s live, her stories are compelling and well done. And in person, did I mention she makes me laugh every single day? One of the funniest people I have ever met. The energy she brings to our newsroom is contagious. And, (THIS IS SO SILLY TO WRITE, BUT I WILL…) she has the most beautiful hair. I’m trying to find out her secrets 🙂

ADRIAN

My apologies, Adrian.. it had to be shared. Papio-La Vista High, 1998. BOOM. We’ve been friends THAT LONG. And I am so very proud of this guy. Adrian is just a freaking awesome journalist. He has no fear. He wants the truth, and that’s what he presents. No gimmicks, no tricks–just incredible journalism, the way it was supposed to be. He’s a gifted public speaker, so naturally a fantastic anchor and live reporter as well. Again, such an INCREDIBLE asset to the KETV team, and it’s pretty awesome getting to work with your friend every day! #MonarchsForLife

ROB

Remember that whole ‘I don’t have enough adjectives’ line? DITTO HERE. Rob is a man of honor. A man of integrity. A good listener, a great friend, an OUTSTANDING journalist–Omaha’s best, hands down. Rob never settles–he is constantly asking more questions, pushing to make his work and all of ours better. But he does it in a way that lifts us all up and makes US better in the process. I tried to sum this all up here when Rob was named as a Face on the Barroom Floor at the Omaha Press Club. He’s just THE MAN.

The ‘other guy’ in the picture with Rob is one of our most important people here at KETV.. 6pm producer Jay Roberts. Jay should give classes in how to just be an awesome, nice guy. The world needs more of Jay. He is always smiling, always stopping by my desk to just say hi and ask how I’m doing–and that means everything on rough days. KINDNESS.. whatever happened to that?!?! His little boy, Everett, is also one of the cutest babies EVER, and anytime I can see videos of his sweet face: INSTANT HAPPINESS 🙂

Ok. I’m done for now, but this is only PART ONE of this installment. Forget the haters.. forget the negativity. In order for the Ghostbusters to finally defeat Vigo and save Baby Oscar.. they didn’t fight hate with hate. They played Jackie Wilson, made the Statue of Liberty strut her stuff to Higher and Higher, and inspired New York City to hug and sing until that dude imploded.

Yeah, I went there. We could all use a little more Jackie Wilson 🙂

Where The Heart Is

You’d think that after 13 years in news, I’d have built up an immunity to some of the emotional stories we share every night.

Not so much.

When we showed our viewers the Honor Flight late last month allowing 460 Korean War veterans to visit their memorial in Washington DC, I almost lost it ON AIR. I was overwhelmed seeing these brave men seeing the gratitude and appreciation they deserved for fighting for our country. For so long, they had been forgotten; not anymore. As their tears flowed, so did mine.

I’m not alone. One of the young women competing in the Miss Nebraska pageant this summer has made it her mission to recognize our heroes.

Miss Heartland, Allison Tietjen

Allison was one of the volunteers who not only raised money for the Honor Flight, she accompanied them as a guardian.

“It gave me a much greater understanding of the incredible sacrifices these men and women have given and the little recognition they got in return,” Allison told me. “As Miss Nebraska, I want to encourage schools and youth organizations to raise money so another Honor Flight can happen.”

To promote her ‘United We Stand: Remembering Our Heroes’ platform, Allison has also spoken at local women’s clubs, school organizations and Girl Scout troops. She’s done all of this in addition to her senior year schedule at Thayer Central High School, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen the same month she was named Miss Heartland.

“I completely understand why girls participate in the Miss Nebraska/America organization,” said Allison. “Yes, the scholarships are wonderful, but the experiences and memories you take away from the service work you do are beyond any scholarship.”

These appearances have also given Allison an opportunity to showcase her favorite part of the competition.

“Who doesn’t love walking on stage in a swimsuit?! I am joking,” Allison said. “I started playing piano at a young age and have loved it ever since! In the past, I have always worked on playing for church, so playing more upbeat songs for pageants has been a blast. Almost every group or organization I speak to as Miss Heartland asks me to play for them, and I never turn down an opportunity.”

From Chester, Nebraska.. to Washington DC.. to North Platte.

Allison has already had quite the journey. There’s still room in her heart for more.

If I Could Be Like Mike

Remember the commercials? The jingle? “I wanna be, I wanna be like Mi-ike!”

(Clearly, I am a child of the 80’s)

Why did we idolize Michael Jordan? Other than the fact he was arguably the best basketball player of all time..

As my boys grow up, I know they’ll have any number of role models they admire and want to be just like. It’s easy to look up to amazing athletes, superstar celebrities, and the rich and powerful. There are qualities that don’t always get the same attention that are, in my opinion, so important, so valued, so WONDERFUL, and if a few more people tried to showcase those attributes, this world could be such a better place.

I’m blessed to work with a few people who showcase those qualities every, single day.

Melissa Fry

Stunning. HILARIOUS. Beautiful on the inside and out. And so very, very kind.

Melissa Fry is ONE-OF-A-KIND. This girl is the life of the party in our newsroom and when we are out having fun together. You can turn to her for anything–an ear to listen, a caring friend, a person who will always make you laugh. She is as down to earth as they come, despite the fact she could model in New York or LA.. she’s that gorgeous.

Here’s what you may not know about Melissa–she is one of the HARDEST WORKING PEOPLE I know. She was an intern here at KETV just like me, and applied here 8 different times before she was hired. She was DETERMINED to work hard and keep trying to return to her hometown. That drive and passion earned Melissa a spot in our 5pm newscast–in addition to reporting everyday and landing some of the biggest interviews in Omaha news. She’ll come in early to shoot an interview. She’ll stay late. She’s worked just about every shift we have here at KETV. And through it all, SHE NEVER, EVER COMPLAINS. This is the kind of work ethic you want your kids to have. She’s the kind of coworker you want on your team. She’s the friend you want in your corner. I’m so lucky I’ve got her in mine 🙂

Jeremy Maskel

Melissa and Jeremy sit in the same corner of our newsroom. Maybe that’s it.. an aura of AWESOME that circles that area.. because Jeremy is also in a whole different league when it comes to genuinely amazing people.

This guy goes out of his way to be nice to people. And he truly means it!! My son used to LOVE watching Jeremy on weekend mornings (before Team Umi-Zoomi and Paw Patrol beat him out..) and I truly think it was because he emits this positive energy that is just contagious. I wish we could bottle it and sell it as a perfume or something just to make everyone a little happier in the world.

Jeremy makes me want to be a better person. THAT is one of the qualities I hope my kiddos pick up on.. what a positive impact you can have on others when you smile, treat people kindly, and truly care.

And did I mention that he’s one of the best reporters we have here at KETV? Brilliant out in the field, an incredible writer, a true team player. Jeremy was just promoted to our weekend evening anchor position, and I couldn’t be happier for him–AWESOME.

They’re just awesome people to be around. They make our team better. They make you want to run faster and jump higher, just like Mike.

Why am I telling you all this? Why did I devote an entire blog post to KETV shout-outs?

Because Thursday I got my first snarky message from a viewer since I returned from maternity leave. I’ve certainly received them before, and I’ll absolutely receive them again. Still, it stings-even if for just a second. And that stinks–that you can be surrounded by so much good, and yet it’s the bad that seems to reverberate. So this blog is just as much for me as it is for my readers (and THANK YOU for reading, by the way!!)

A reminder to all of us.. we are surrounded by ‘Mikes’. And I’m so thankful for that.
