Going The Extra Mile

Two of my coworkers ran marathons this morning.

I’m going to give you a minute to let that sink in…

TWO OF MY COWORKERS RAN MARATHONS THIS MORNING.  Yea, as I was prying my booty off the floor to get a second cup of half coffee/half Coffeemate, Alex Hoffman and Amanda Crawford were RUNNING MARATHONS. 26.2 miles.

alex amanda

Beauties, I bow down to you!! AMAZING!!!

These women are just magnificent.  As athletes, as journalists, as PEOPLE.

Alex is our fantastic First News anchor with John Oakey, and if you haven’t checked them out, IT’S AN ABSOLUTE MUST.  DVR them if you’re not up that early.  Their energy is contagious–they deliver the days news with a smile and positive attitude, despite getting up around 2am (or earlier!) to get to work on time for that early morning shift.  Check out Alex’s Facebook page; you can truly see how much they enjoy their jobs and working together.

Everything I just said about Alex… DITTO FOR MISS AMANDA!  Amanda is our First News Weekend Anchor with David Earl, and she ALSO is articulate, stunning, and energetic despite pulling into the Newsplex before some of us even go to bed for the night.  Amanda always has a way of making ME smile at home; no easy task before coffee on an early weekend morning 🙂

Both of these young women can also DELIVER when it comes to serious news.  When the International Nutrition building exploded and collapses, Alex anchored our continuous coverage while Amanda reported from the field.  They were incredible.  Folks, it is no easy task to just talk.. for hours.. not knowing what will happen next.  They presented the story without any added drama or superlatives, so important as journalists on such a tragic day.  They were articulate and informative, trustworthy and empathetic.  They made me very proud to be part of the same team.

Outside the Newsplex, I just love these ladies.  Alex and I play softball together (and FYI.. just 36 hours before she ran this half-marathon, SHE SMACKED A DOUBLE past the outfielders heads Friday night..), and have a love/obsession with Miss America.  Amanda and I had bond over country music and gymnastics.  We love them.. maybe a little too much 🙂

These women are just incredible.  They run MARATHONS for crying out loud (Amanda reported every few miles during hers!! How is that possible?!?!?)

***

Now, I’d like to introduce you to two other incredible women you may not know.  The ‘cheerleaders’ if you will, here at KETV.

kelly renee

Producers Kelly Shoff and Renee Ludvik

These women ‘make the magic happen’ so to speak.  All day they are busy gathering information, making phone calls, and writing the newscasts we present to you at night.  When something bad happens behind the scenes, it’s their job to rearrange all the pieces so you at home never know.  9 times out of 10, you don’t; they’re that good.

Perfect example: Thursday afternoon, something within our system crashed and we lost all of our commercials.  Technology isn’t perfect–it happens.  Did you have any idea??  PROBABLY NOT, because Renee rearranged her newscast, kept Melissa and Adrian in the loop through their earpieces as to what was going on, while Kelly managed a team to quickly find other stories from our sister stations around the country to fill the time void.  It was truly incredible to see these ladies in action.  SEAMLESS.

Renee started out just like me here at KETV–an intern who worked her tail off and earned a full-time job.  She’s worked literally every shift we have here at KETV and has become an incredible producer.  When breaking news happens, Renee is A SEA OF CALM, confident, she gets it DONE.  And when someone calls in sick or takes vacation, Renee is often the one who steps up to the plate to fill in someone else’s shift.

When that horrible day at Von Maur happened in December 2007, Kelly stepped into the producer’s box.  I don’t have any idea how many hours she was up there, with no break, producing our coverage on air.  She handled phone interviews, live reporters, video, new information… EVERYTHING.

But there’s more to Kelly and Renee then their loyalty and incredible work ethic here at KETV.  Look at their smiles in those photos–their INNER beauty just shining through.  These women are ALWAYS the first to tell coworkers that they look nice.  That they enjoyed their story the night before.  They take the time, even when they are crazy-busy, to watch video of your kids doing something cute.  They LISTEN.  These are the people who make a day worthwhile, the cheerleaders who make you take a breath and say ‘it’s going to be a good day.’

***

I am in AWE of the amazing accomplishments I see in my coworkers everyday here at KETV.  But I am equally blown away by, and am SO grateful for, positive energy and just plain KINDNESS.  As great as it is to feel a sense of accomplishment, it is WONDERFUL to get a compliment on that, whatever it might be.

SO THANK YOU Alex, Amanda, Kelly and Renee.  For inspiring me to run a little further (or at all!) and to go the extra mile to try to make a difference in someone’s day.

If Nebraska Had An Ocean..

I’m going to date myself again, but any readers love the Little Mermaid as a kid?  Anyone? <crickets>

Hey, Brandi.. 1989 called for you…

Let’s recap.  The Little Mermaid is a Disney CLASSIC about a gorgeous mermaid with an even more gorgeous voice who wins the heart of everyone in the ocean and in the end, a handsome prince.

If Disney ever makes a real-life version, today’s featured Miss Nebraska contestant would be PERFECT for the part.

Miss Chadron, Kodi Baumann

(Thank you Judy’s Photo for use of Kodi’s pictures!)

The red hair, the passion for singing–she’s perfect!

When Kodi recently replied to my interview request, she included not only pictures of herself, but images showing what music means to her.

Untitled 2   Untitled 1   Untitled

“I love being able to put together a song and perform for an audience,” said Kodi.  “The experience is so exhilarating!  I love being able to share my passion of music with a crowd.  Hopefully it touches someone and they enjoy the music I create.”

Kodi first started competing in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen program at the age of 13, looking for another place to sing.

“This pageant system has become so much more than another stage for me,” said Kodi.  “I have been able to discover who I am and it’s helped me grow into an accomplished woman.  I have had so many doors open up to me because of this system!  It’s singing that is paying my way through college and without the confidence I gained from the Miss America Organization I’m not sure I would be here.”

Now as a student at Western Nebraska Community College, Kodi is part of Varsity Vocalize, along with two of her fellow Miss Nebraska contestants, Miss Western Nebraska Morgan Yost and Miss Scotts Bluff County Brittli Sell.

“I have also created so many ‘pageant sisters’ that have become fantastic friends of mine,” said Kodi.  “I’m so lucky to call them friends!”

Kodi has also connected with a different kind of sister.  Her favorite part of the Miss Nebraska pageant is the Little Sisters program.

“This is a mentoring program that pairs young girls with a young woman competing for a title in the Miss America Organization,” described Kodi.  “It deals with sharing the importance of the four components of the Miss America crown: style, success, scholarship and service.  I know they have made an impact on my life and I will always think of each of them as my little sisters I never had!”

Check out Kodi’s online photo album featuring her Little Sisters!

Kodi’s real-life brother inspired her personal platform of service, ‘Fasten Your Seat Belt! Cross Your Heart Not Your Fingers.’

“When I was a freshman in high school my older brother was involved in a roll-over accident,” said Kodi.  “He had a traumatic brain injury, broken eye socket, four broken vertebrae, broken shoulder blades, and a broken femur.  He lost a kidney, suffered a lacerate spleen and liver and had to relearn how to walk.  I want to spread awareness about wearing seat belts because not only did it affect my brother, it affected my entire family.”

Kodi maintains a Facebook page, devoted to her platform.  Check it out here!

FOCUSED, HONEST, ADVENTUROUS

Kodi is honest about her feelings regarding the Lifestyle and Fitness portion of the Miss Nebraska pageant, also known as the swimsuit competition.

“I am someone who will always tell the truth,” said Kodi.  “I can’t help but feeling like [swimsuit] is a large hurdle for me to overcome for me and many others I’m sure.  I’m sure many can relate!”

(Blog author contribution… PREACH, KODI!! PREACH!!)

“But once you overcome that obstacle you realize that you can do anything!” Kodi added.  “Swimsuit is a very important part of competition.  It shows the physical fitness of all the competitors and plays a huge role in reflecting the woman’s confidence and pride in themselves.”

Kodi says she is focused to achieve that goal and others.

3

And adventurous, the kind of girl who loves to travel and experience new things (like here, kissing the Blarney Stone!)

Kodi sent me one final quote, not necessarily about music but everything to do with her..

4

Pretty sure Ariel had a t-shirt with this quote on it.

Nebraska may not have an ocean or any Little Mermaids, and Kodi doesn’t have time to search for the handsome prince.

She’s getting ready for Miss Nebraska.

PREVIOUS POST..  Miss Panhandle, Mindy Schreiber

NEXT POST.. Miss Western Nebraska, Morgan Yost!

FIERCE

“This is the year I will be stronger, braver, kinder and unstoppable. This year I will be fierce.”

LOVE IT.  I may print off that quote and frame it on my desk.

Let me introduce you to the author…

MINDY 2

Miss Panhandle, Mindy Schreiber

As you might have seen from my other features on this year’s Miss Nebraska contestants, the year of service as a local titleholder is no easy job.  It requires time, dedication and preparation, often in addition to school, work and other commitments.  This is Mindy’s FIFTH year of service.  She’s been a titleholder in Nebraska since 2010, finishing as 1st runner up TWICE at Miss Nebraska.

“My determination has allowed me to keep persevering for my dream job of Miss Nebraska,” said Mindy in a recent interview.  That same drive has also helped Mindy graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in three years and complete her graduate degree (in addition to her bachelor’s) within five.  Just four months from completion of that degree, she’s also a Family Medical Therapy Intern with the University of Nebraska.  Still, she’s managed to make her way around the state speaking about her platform and making appearances, this year as Miss Panhandle.

IMG_4789

“My friends and family joke that I live out of my car because I am always on the go to another appearance, school, or whatever may be on my calendar for the day!” said Mindy.  “I love being involved in many activities and organizations because it enables me to give back in diverse ways and meet people all across Nebraska while having fun.”

DETERMINED, PASSIONATE, OUTGOING

From the beginning, Mindy has been an ambassador for the TeamMates Mentoring Program, created by Nebraska legend Tom Osborne.  Mindy shares those experiences through appearances as Miss Panhandle, advocating for her platform of service she calls ‘Mentoring: The Power of ONE.’

IMG_1832

“Growing up the youngest of four children, I always looked up to my siblings in every aspect of life,” said Mindy.  “The lessons I learned from them, as well as from other mentors of mine, will guide me for the rest of my life.  Mentoring is ONE mentor, giving ONE hour of their time ONE day a week to help ONE young person be successful.  Everyone can spare one hour to make a difference in a young person’s life.”

MINDY

That influence from her older sisters is actually what inspired Mindy to participate in the Miss Nebraska system.

“I saw how they grew as individuals and as I watched them on stage, I told myself, ‘someday, I’m going to do that,'” said Mindy.  “Now, in the final year of this journey, I feel so blessed to be part of this wonderful organization.  What I have gained from competing cannot be taught anywhere else, nor can this experience be repeated anywhere else.”

IMG_0295   IMG_0298

That is just one of the positive takeaways from the Miss America Organization, according to Mindy.

“These relationships are invaluable,” said Mindy.  “When the pageant is over, I will still have the friends I have met throughout competing and I will forever be grateful for that.”

Mindy says she has also remained debt free throughout her entire post-secondary education, thanks to Miss America.

“The organization is still relevant today because it is the leading scholarship provider for women in the world,” said Mindy.  “Any young woman can be a part of this incredible organization; there is no stereotype, making Miss America both relevant and relatable.”

cover - Version 2

“Passion flows out of me no matter what I may be doing.  I genuinely want to invest 110% of my heart into everything I do.  It’s how I was raised and it’s a standard I hold myself to.”

The young women who participate in this system are the best of the best; they lead the pack in their communities, schools and churches.  In Mindy’s case; she’s leading a marathon of sorts and the finish line is drawing closer in North Platte.

Mindy Schreiber has her fierce game face on.  Smiling, of course.

PREVIOUS POST..  Miss State Fair, Aleah Peters!

NEXT POST.. Miss Chadron, Kodi Baumann!

** Watch for an upcoming post featuring all of this year’s Miss Nebraska Outstanding Teen contestants! **

How Do You Like Me Now?

This is my 9th feature on this year’s Miss Nebraska contestants, and I feel like with every profile I write and the pictures I post, I think, ‘WOW, this girl is just BEAUTIFUL!’  It’s hard to imagine a time in any of their lives when they were picked on, targeted, or felt sadness because of someone else’s words against them.

Not the case.

In so many of these interviews, these women have revealed moments in their past in which they were bullied for a variety of reasons.  Kids can be cruel; even more so in today’s age of social media, when it’s so very easy to tweet or post something mean about someone behind the shield of the internet.

This young lady is taking on the bullies, and showing everyone who feels alone that THIS is who you can become.

IMG_2605

Miss State Fair, Aleah Peters

(Thank you Marla Austin Photography for use of Aleah’s photo!)

THAT SMILE.  From the moment I met Aleah, that has been something that is always there, in every picture, in every moment she’s on stage, and whenever you are around her in person.  THAT SMILE.  Little did I know before our interview, it hasn’t always been there.

“When I was in high school I was bullied by a group of girls,” said Aleah in a recent interview.  “I feared going to school, attending sporting events or even answering my phone.  Since then I have realized that this is a problem that has affected, or will affect, everyone.  Whether a person experiences being the victim, the bully, or a bystander, it is important that we stand up for change.”

IMG_1805

Aleah is taking her message, dubbed ‘Stand for the Silent, Anti-Bullying’ to kids across the state of Nebraska.

“I have learned so much from each person I have met throughout my year,” said Aleah.  “This position allows me to be a role model to kids of all ages and a contributing member in my community.  Wearing a crown and sash gives me credibility and the chance to make a difference.”

Aleah is also raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network, Miss America’s community partner.  She recently organized the ‘Miss Valentine’ pageant, drawing more than 40 little girls.  Each child was treated to hair and makeup pampering, then participated in an opening number dance, modeling and an interview.  Every girl was recognized for something she did well in; the event raised more than $2,000 for the charity.

IMG_2261 IMG_2265

“The girls had a wonderful time!” said Aleah.  “The event was a huge success!”

DRIVEN, EXUBERANT, COMPASSIONATE

“I genuinely care for the people around me,” said Aleah.  “I always try to make somebody’s day a little bit brighter.”

Those qualities helped Aleah finish as 1st runner-up in the Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen competition in 2010.  After graduating from Millard South High School, she decided to compete for Miss Nebraska.  While she says she enjoys all areas of the competition, Interview is her favorite.

“This part of the competition allows me to show the judges who I really am past all of the glamorous gowns, fit bodies and flashy talent,” said Aleah.  “Interview sets each individual apart from each other because we are all so different.”

IMG_2303

Aleah also has plenty of practice for the Talent portion of the competition; she works at Sue’s Stepperettes in Omaha, where she has twirled baton for years along with fellow contestants Miss River City Rachel Foehlinger and Miss Metro Kim Brennan.  See if you can spot Aleah in KETV’s story on Sue’s Stepperettes when they celebrated 40 years in May of 2013.

As for Lifestyle and Fitness, or swimsuit competition, Aleah believes it should remain part of the Miss America system.

“The goal of the organization is to help women become the best version of themselves in all areas of their life including fitness,” said Aleah.  “This area of competition has helped me develop self-confidence and realize the importance of living a healthy life.”

In Aleah’s case.. healthy AND happy.  Did I mention her awesome smile?

IMG_2462

I can’t help but hope those girls who were mean to her so many years ago see this post, or see Aleah’s picture and achievements, and someday teach their kids to be kinder than they were.  If I WERE Aleah, I’d be dancing in my bedroom, singing to Toby Keith’s ‘How Do You Like Me Now?’ at the top of my lungs.

I’m guessing Aleah doesn’t do that.  She doesn’t need to, when she can make little girls smile just like her.

PREVIOUS POST.. Miss River City Rachel Foehlinger

NEXT POST….  Miss Panhandle, Mindy Schreiber!

River Deep, Mountain High

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away….

I competed in the Miss Nebraska pageant.  Many moons and many pounds ago.

I loved performing on stage and speaking about issues and causes I believe in.  I will also never forget the amazing show of support I had from my family, friends and even strangers throughout the two years I competed.

Before Miss Nebraska 2002, a sweet little girl approached me with a neon green poster she had created just for me–it warmed my heart, especially considering her older sister was competing, too.  That little girl’s name was Rachel.

This year, SHE is competing for the title of Miss Nebraska 2014.

Screen shot 2014-03-14 at 8.23.11 PM

Miss River City Rachel Foehlinger

Rachel has been part of the Miss Nebraska family for more than a decade.  Both of her older sisters, Tina and Tami Foehlinger, competed in the Miss Nebraska pageant in 2001 and 2002 respectively, and Tina went on to represent Nebraska in the Miss America pageant, named as a Top-20 semi-finalist.  Rachel was just 9 at the time.

“There are no words for the impact this had on me,” Rachel told me in a recent interview.  “Not only was I in awe of what she had accomplished, along with all of the other contestants, I was in love with the organization and everything it stood for.  I looked at those young women on the stage and said to myself I want to be just like them when I get older.”

10287833_10202014022215031_1279926146_o

Rachel went on to become Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen in 2008.  Her journey continues now as Miss River City, representing the Omaha metro area along with her ‘pageant sisters’ Miss Omaha Payton Merritt and Miss Douglas County Megan Swanson.  Her history with the Miss America organization has made her a passionate advocate for the system and the women who participate in it.

“Never before has there been such a need for genuinely positive role models, which is exactly how I would describe the women I have met through the Miss America Organization,” said Rachel.  “I have already grown so much just by competing that I will be forever thankful to have been involved with this organization, whether I walk away with the crown or not.”

PASSIONATE, STRONG, FUN!

Rachel is no stranger to pressure or to the spotlight.  She is a world champion baton twirler with Sue’s Stepperettes in Ralston, which is owned by her mother, Sue Foehlinger.  Rachel has not only competed and performed since she was old enough to hold a baton, she has watched generations of twirlers train at her family’s studio and around the world.  KETV showcased Sue’s Stepperettes when they celebrated 40 years in May of 2013.  Two other Miss Nebraska contestants, Miss Metro Kim Brennan and Miss State Fair Aleah Peters, are also Stepperettes.

That legacy has earned the Stepperettes notoriety and respect around the world, even drawing local sports guys in to try and learn the art of the baton.  Rachel was on TV again in July of 2011, trying to teach KETV’s Andy Kendeigh how to twirl.. without hurting himself or others 🙂

Rachel made a name for herself several years ago, named as the Featured Twirler for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  She performed every Saturday during football season in front of 80,000 plus football fans, the fourth Foehlinger sibling to twirl for the University of Nebraska.  Omaha World Herald columnist Mike Kelly chronicled their run before Rachel’s last home game in November.

562332_10200594943978962_1924409341_n   1185763_10200608973809699_167566500_n

“I have spent my entire life dedicating myself to the sport that has given me the drive to succeed individually as well as part of a team,” said Rachel.  “I feel blessed beyond belief to be able to share my talent on the Miss Nebraska stage!”

As Miss River City, Rachel is also sharing a personal message, spreading awareness of skin cancer.  Both Rachel’s uncle and cousin died from melanoma.

“Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer in the United States.  At the current rate, one person dies from melanoma every hour,” said Rachel.  “I spend every day thinking of ways to get the word out it CAN happen to anyone.”

DSC04943

Rachel says she’s involved in several efforts to raise awareness, including a recently launched campaign called #TheBedIsDead, encouraging people to avoid tanning beds.

(Check out KETV’s stories about why both cancer survivors and doctors fully support the campaignand the impact it’s having on students.)

Rachel is also a student liaison for the Nebraska Skin Cancer Prevention Act, recently passed by the Nebraska Legislature requiring anyone under the age of 16 have parental permission before using a tanning bed.

“My part in both of these campaigns is to spread awareness to youth, high school students and colleges,” said Rachel.  “So many of us have an ‘it won’t happen to me’ attitude.  This is a dangerous attitude, because once you get melanoma, you can never turn back.”

DSC04467

It’s truly amazing how life comes full circle.  That 12 years after a sweet little brunette presented me with a poster she made, wishing me luck at Miss Nebraska, I would be BLOGGING about her journey for the same title.  That ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ played when Tina Foehlinger competed for and won Miss Nebraska, and Miss River City Rachel Foehlinger will be competing for the same title in June.

Fate? Who knows.  A dream? Absolutely.  Rachel’s ready to bring the crown back home.. and maybe her own poster made by another sweet, little girl.

NEXT POST….  Miss State Fair Aleah Peters!

Calling Jackie Wilson

“You learn to ignore it as much as you possibly can, but everyone’s human.  Its going to affect you a little bit.”

–Nebraska Football Coach, Bo Pelini

Part of me thinks it’s kind of ridiculous to think I have ANYTHING in common with a guy like Bo Pelini.  But when he said this in our interview recently, and especially when I later listened to our interview and really thought about these words, I thought, ‘PREACH, COACH!’

Much like Pelini, many of us in TV News understood and tried to accept that by putting ourselves out there every night.. or morning.. or weekend morning.. we would encounter criticism, and a lot of it.  After 13 years in this business, I feel like my skin is FINALLY thick enough I don’t take home, or take to heart, the insults about my lipstick, hair, etc… and I’m so grateful that we have a great deal more WONDERFUL viewers who boost our egos with amazing compliments.  However, there are days, like today, when it’s too much.

An anonymous, insulting email about a coworker.  Hurtful comments about the people I interview, willing to put themselves out there to share their stories.

I drove home for dinner tonight FURIOUS.  I think my blood was truly boiling.  I cranked up my stereo, rolled down my windows, and tried to breathe.

I also reached a conclusion, a solution.  One that won’t stop the negatives.. because in this world of Facebook, Twitter, emails, chatboards… it will NEVER stop.  But maybe, MAYBE this will help.  Even a little bit.

I’ll fight the negative, with positive.

MELISSA

photo (30)

If we could clone people, I would clone Melissa Fry.  She is AMAZING.  MAGNIFICENT.  I don’t have enough adjectives.  She is smart, SUCH a hard worker, and just an incredible person.  Melissa is a fantastic anchor, a truly caring and gifted storyteller, and she lights up our entire newsroom when she is here.  She just GLOWS.  In a business where it’s so easy to be competitive, to make enemies and develop rivalries, I think it’s truly special and representative of her character to say she is arguably my best friend here.  We are SO very lucky to have Melissa Fry on our team.

KRISTYNA

autism

I. Heart. Kristyna Engdahl.  She makes me laugh every single day.  She is a GREAT reporter and writer.  She works fast but her work isn’t sacrificed in the process. She’s succinct and articulate when she’s live, her stories are compelling and well done.  And in person, did I mention she makes me laugh every single day?  One of the funniest people I have ever met.  The energy she brings to our newsroom is contagious.  And, (THIS IS SO SILLY TO WRITE, BUT I WILL…) she has the most beautiful hair.  I’m trying to find out her secrets 🙂

ADRIAN

1998

My apologies, Adrian.. it had to be shared.  Papio-La Vista High, 1998.  BOOM.  We’ve been friends THAT LONG.  And I am so very proud of this guy.  Adrian is just a freaking awesome journalist.  He has no fear.  He wants the truth, and that’s what he presents.  No gimmicks, no tricks–just incredible journalism, the way it was supposed to be.  He’s a gifted public speaker, so naturally a fantastic anchor and live reporter as well.  Again, such an INCREDIBLE asset to the KETV team, and it’s pretty awesome getting to work with your friend every day! #MonarchsForLife

ROB

jay

Remember that whole ‘I don’t have enough adjectives’ line?  DITTO HERE.  Rob is a man of honor.  A man of integrity.  A good listener, a great friend, an OUTSTANDING journalist–Omaha’s best, hands down.  Rob never settles–he is constantly asking more questions, pushing to make his work and all of ours better.  But he does it in a way that lifts us all up and makes US better in the process.  I tried to sum this all up here when Rob was named as a Face on the Barroom Floor at the Omaha Press Club.  He’s just THE MAN.

**

The ‘other guy’ in the picture with Rob is one of our most important people here at KETV.. 6pm producer Jay Roberts.  Jay should give classes in how to just be an awesome, nice guy.  The world needs more of Jay.  He is always smiling, always stopping by my desk to just say hi and ask how I’m doing–and that means everything on rough days.  KINDNESS.. whatever happened to that?!?!  His little boy, Everett, is also one of the cutest babies EVER, and anytime I can see videos of his sweet face: INSTANT HAPPINESS 🙂

***

Ok.  I’m done for now, but this is only PART ONE of this installment.  Forget the haters.. forget the negativity.  In order for the Ghostbusters to finally defeat Vigo and save Baby Oscar.. they didn’t fight hate with hate.  They played Jackie Wilson, made the Statue of Liberty strut her stuff to Higher and Higher, and inspired New York City to hug and sing until that dude imploded.

Yeah, I went there.  We could all use a little more Jackie Wilson 🙂

There’s No Place Like Home

I’m heading to the Rascal Flatts concert at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center Saturday night.

I. HEART. RASCAL FLATTS.

I can be in a horrible mood, but when I crank up my country in my car and star in my own, personal concert… everything is better.  One of my favorites: ‘No Reins’.

Like a painted wild Mustang, Flyin’ out across the open range
Finally gets to live her life that way, No fear, no fences, nobody
No reins, no reins

Meet a young lady who IS flying, living life her way, and soon, this Mustang is coming home to compete in the Miss Nebraska pageant.

10256446_10152420262899468_3375685608844711998_n

Miss Douglas County, Megan Swanson

Megan’s a proud Mustang at that, a 2011 graduate of Millard North High School, born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska.  She’s pursuing a Commercial Voice Music Major at Nashville’s Belmont University, with the goal of further pursuing a career as a Christian Music artist.

I won’t even keep you in suspense–click here to listen to Megan’s music!

Music is not only Megan’s passion, right now, it’s her life.

“In addition to my actual class work, we also have anywhere from 2-4 ‘zero-credit’ mandatory classes per week, have to practice our primary and secondary instruments, prepare for lessons, set up rehearsals, go to concerts, and perform in concerts!” Megan told me in a recent interview.  “Not to mention, any of us who are pursuing a full-time career in music are trying to gig as much as we can outside of school!”

Off-stage and out of class, Megan also works two jobs, and devotes what little time she has to service, volunteering in her community and church.

“Miss Nebraska, to me, is someone who is a woman who takes charge of her schedule instead of being overwhelmed by it,” said Megan.  “A woman who is strong and courageous, mixed with class and grace.”

DYNAMIC, COMPETITIVE, CHAMELEON

Here’s another side of Miss Douglas County..

At 6-feet tall, Megan has been modeling since the age of 11.  She also plays basketball and dances, activities that all bring out her inner competitor.

“I learned that sometimes in life we aren’t going to be the ‘winner’, but it’s about deciding whether the goal is something you truly want, and choosing to press on toward its fruition,” said Megan.  “To me, competition is about trying new things, working hard, and learning that God placed you on this earth to be YOU, so there’s absolutely no reason to compare yourself!”

Helping others find that same confidence has become a mission for Megan, inspiring her personal service platform she calls ‘Total Body Wellness: Mind, Body and Spirit’.  Despite pursuing a rigorous diet and exercise routine to feel better about herself, Megan says she still continued on a downward spiral.

“It wasn’t until the end of freshman year [in college] when something went off inside me that I had to change what was on the inside to affect change on the outside,” said Megan.  “With the support of my family, leaders of my church, and God within me, I began my research of how to strengthen ourselves from the inside out.”

Megan hopes to spread her message through an upcoming event she organized call ‘Queens of the Kingdom’, described as a one night mini-conference for teenage girls and women to learn more about wellness of spirit, soul and body through the eyes of faith and identity.  She’ll donate a portion of proceeds from the event to the Children’s Miracle Network, Miss America’s community partner.

“TBW also focuses heavily on going into schools,” said Megan.  “Connecting how one’s environment plays a huge role in wellness, and how we can help our own self-esteem by choosing to stand against bullying, believing that everyone was created for a purpose and that everyone deserves an equal chance to live a happy and healthy life!”

THERE SHE IS..

Megan says her work as Miss Douglas County, and the work of her fellow Miss Nebraska contestants, show why the pageant and the women who are involved are still relevant in 2014.

“She isn’t a pretty face, she’s a businesswoman who markets, books, and sells herself in conjunction with her platform to bring a message that matters,” said Megan.  “For some reason, putting a crown on your head and a sash around your waist makes many people listen, and the job of Miss Nebraska is exactly that; an opportunity to say something meaningful and have it impact lives.”

I’m not sure if Megan is a country music fan like me.  Maybe when she flies home next month, her I-Pod will be loaded with her own creations, something inspiring to awaken her spirit for the competition ahead.  Or maybe, she’ll just be smiling and humming along to Judy Garland. After all, and especially when your sash reads Miss Douglas County, there’s no place like home.

NEXT POST….  Miss River City Rachel Foehlinger!

A Spoonful of Sugar

For generations, Mary Poppins has been teaching kids everywhere that you can do anything with a positive attitude.  Maybe it’s just cleaning your room, like the Banks’ kids, but with a ‘spoonful of sugar’ you can accomplish it, and with a smile.

Think of today’s featured Miss Nebraska contestant like a 2014 version of Miss Poppins…

Miss Sugar Valley, Tosha Skinner

The college junior from Hay Springs, Nebraska is trying to make life a little sweeter for people across the state, especially young women and children.  Tosha has dubbed her mission BEAUTY, representing the words Believe, Embrace, Accept, Transform, You.

“I personally have struggled with Body Image Disorder and the numerous side effects most of my life,” Tosha told me recently.  “When people realize they are not alone, it is easier to deal with.  I want to spread the word in order to not only make it known, but also to help people that are suffering from any form of Body Image Disorder.”  Tosha not only speaks at events about her platform, she has also created a blog to share her story and spread awareness.

Tosha first got involved in the Miss Nebraska system as a Little Sister, a program partnering young girls with the Miss Nebraska contestants.  These kiddos get to dress up and escort their Big Sisters during the competition itself, perform on stage during the pageant, and form friendships with the young women who are so often role models to them.

“It gave me a chance to be up on stage, which is one of my passions,” said Tosha.  “But as I have gotten older, it has helped me grow into the woman I am today.  I attribute pageants to so much; my ability to speak in public, my strong leadership skills and my passion for service are just a few.”

One of Tosha’s new friends she made as Miss Sugar Valley

Tosha credits the Miss America organization for helping women everywhere find their voices and passions, bettering themselves along the way.

“I love being surrounded by women who are just as passionate and dedicated as I am!” said Tosha.  “And people should care about Miss Nebraska because the women who are competing are our future leaders in our country.  Every woman competing will make a difference, whether it’s through politics, business, philanthropy or anything else they set their mind to.”

DETERMINED, PERSISTENT, BLESSED

Anyone who thinks beauty queens just walk around waving their hands and smiling all day need only look at Tosha’s daily schedule.  The full-time student is involved in five organizations on campus (holding office in four of them), holds an internship at Talent Plus, Inc, and is paying for college by herself.  Still, she wants more; she wants the job of Miss Nebraska.

“I am ready to take on this job,” said Tosha.  “Being Miss Nebraska is about more than competing at Miss America and appearances, it’s a full-time job.  It will allow me to take the negative stigma away from body image and allow people to understand that everyone’s bodies are different.  But loving yourself inside and out is what it takes.”

And a spoonful of sugar never hurts.

NEXT POST….  Miss Douglas County Megan Swanson!

She Said Yeah

YEAH..

The Rolling Stones, Joe Nichols, Usher.. they’ve all made that 4-letter word famous in their music.

This guy made a career out of it..

Kool Aid

Kool-Aid Man debuted in 1975, using his signature phrase, “Ohhhhh, yeeeaaaaahhh!” to remind us all how awesome a glass of ice-cold Kool-Aid tastes in the heat of a Nebraska summer.

Where am I going with this?!?!? Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Kool-Aid Man’s female (and much cooler) counterpart..

Miss Kool-Aid Days, Jessica Littlejohn

Ummmm.. Kool-Aid? There’s a ‘Miss Kool-Aid Days’?!?

This local pageant, another preliminary to the Miss Nebraska pageant in June, is named for the festival of the same name that takes place in Hastings every year.  Hastings is the ‘birthplace’ of Kool-Aid.

Make jokes, but Jessica is serious about the business of Miss Nebraska and the Miss America system.

“This program produces well rounded and ready to work individuals striving for the best,” Jessica told me recently.  “I think this  is more relevant now than it has ever been!  This is the biggest scholarship program for young women in the world and with school prices on the rise, it’s a blessing to have the scholarships.  This coming from someone that has literally paid her entire way through school thus far with the scholarships from this program.”

Jessica’s already had practice with traveling, frequently driving across the state for appearances as Miss Kool-Aid Days.  This is one of her favorite parts of her job, but also leads to some ‘low’ moments.

“The dreaded ‘low fuel’ light that comes on in the car,” said Jessica.  “Being from the west side of the state, many of the appearances and events happen to be on the east side.  Don’t get me wrong, love the drives, love the scenery and love the music blaring on the radio the whole 9-hour trip, but as soon as that light comes on, party’s over!”

Jessica’s had enough gas to make it to Omaha a few times; in the summer of 2013, she, along with several of this year’s Miss Nebraska contestants, was featured on the reality television show ‘Obsessed With The Dress’, recorded at Winning Crown Boutique.

National TV aside, Jessica uses many of her public events to discuss her platform, ‘Kid Power, Stranger Danger.”

“I was actually taken as a child,” said Jessica.  “My mother had taught me the right actions and she had alerted the authorities and I was returned.  I feel it is my duty to spread the world on how to, one, avoid a danger situation.  Two, to stay safe in a dangerous situation.  Three, what to do in a dangerous situation.  I feel it is worthwhile to teach children, teens and adults to be aware and prepared.”

image 2

DEDICATED, STRONG WILLED, EFFERVESCENT

“I feel like every situation, I try to bring up a positive vibe and I’m naturally a very happy person,” said Jessica.  “I choose to never give up.  I have always set my mind on a task and done all I can to accomplish that.  I’m willing to figure out other options to get a job done.”

Jessica will take that positivity with her to Miss Nebraska; she says ‘the girls’, her fellow competitors, are her favorite part of the pageant.

“They understand you!” said Jessica.  “They have the same goals, they are constantly striving to better themselves and others along their journey.  We understand each other and understand that this is not just a beauty pageant.  We are all talented in our own ways.  I value each of them for that.”

Still, if you ask Jessica is SHE is ready for the job of Miss Nebraska, she could probably sum up her response in a phrase fitting of Miss Kool-Aid Days. OH, YEAH!

“I want this job and that is exactly how I see Miss Nebraska, as a job!” said Jessica.  “The Miss Nebraska program celebrates the unique, diverse, impeccable women that have and will yet compete.  [The program] looks for the ‘it girl’ factor in every girl, and I feel that I possess those qualities.”

NEXT POST….  Miss Sugar Valley Tosha Skinner!

Omaha! Omaha!

DISCLAIMER: Omaha’s my town.  Ok, Papillion is actually my hometown, but Omaha is my ADOPTIVE town. (I have dual citizenship.)

I’ve been a volunteer with the Miss Omaha organization for a few years now, so I know Miss Omaha and her fellow titleholders Miss Douglas County and Miss River City a little better than I know some of the others.  I’ve been following one of these young women ever since she competed as a teenager back in 2011.  The first night I saw her compete, I remember this tiny little girl walking on stage, opening her mouth to sing.. and my jaw DROPPING in awe of her voice.

oma

Miss Omaha, Payton Merritt

This young woman is not only on a mission to win the title of Miss Nebraska in June, but to shatter every stereotype about pageants along the way.

“My job isn’t about outer beauty, but compassion and intellect,” said Payton, who recently received nearly a full-ride scholarship to Creighton University.  “I want others to see that and understand that not everyone is simply seeking a place in the spotlight, but that we truly want to make a difference.”

As Miss Omaha, Payton is waging war against eating disorders, something she says she has personal experience with.

“It is not always the easiest thing to talk about, and the fact that it isn’t so is the exact reason I am doing it,” said Payton.  “It was difficult for me to choose this as my platform because of the shame I had felt for so long, but ultimately, I came to the conclusion that I needed to set a precedent for others suffering.  It is my hope to let people know it is okay to talk about and reach out for help, but also to make friends and family members aware of the severity and warning signs.”

I asked Payton, as I did all of the contestants, if Lifestyle and Fitness, aka the swimsuit competition, should remain part of the Miss Nebraska pageant?

“Many illnesses can be prevented from establishing healthy eating habits and exercise routines,” said Payton.  “To me, fitness in swimsuit is about working to become the best you can be inside and out and truly loving and embracing yourself and your body as God created it to be.”

Payton graduated a semester early from Lincoln East High School in December, and travels to Omaha frequently to take part in events.  Most recently, she sang the national anthem for the University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball game versus Kansas State. (Click here to watch.. and listen!)

“I am young and have a lot to learn, and that openness to learning allows me to relate to a broad spectrum of people, tirelessly devote myself to a multitude of causes, and to fully embody the job and mission this title brings,” said Payton.

BELIEVER

“My faith tells me that I am exactly where I need to be,” said Payton.  “I believe in the power of one person, but more importantly, I believe in the power of one person and an organization as prestigious and respected as the Miss America Organization.”

The Super Bowl may be over.. but the Super Bowl of pageants is about to begin.  THIS Payton is ready for Miss Nebraska.
