The Momma-To-Be Wish List

Any expectant mother will tell you that some days you just feel better than others.  Your baby isn’t sitting on your lungs.  You don’t feel nauseous or exhausted.  You make it up the whole flight of stairs without stopping.

This is my wish list for those ‘other’ days..

skyfari

A Skyfari for the Newsplex.

Just like the one at the Henry Doorly Zoo, except this one would transport me upstairs and down.  Although I’m fairly certain since this would pass right by the KETV Sports Office, the motor would quickly burn out from Andy and Thor riding it all day..

segway

My own Segway for the Newsplex

Look how happy that lady is!!  And she’s not pregnant!

the claw

The Claw

Unlike the first two things on my wish list, I may seriously have to consider this one.  That or risk Ryan Luby moving to another desk MUCH farther away from mine, where I can’t constantly bother him to help me  because I can’t reach something..

dq

Dairy Queen in the KETV lobby

Just a little stand in our building. One I can ride my Segway to and grab a quick Blizzard.. every day. I haven’t taken a survey in our newsroom yet, but I’m pretty sure this would be universally accepted by our team..

Oh, to dream… 🙂

Climbing Up On My Soapbox

As a journalist, I always try to keep my opinions to myself in the workplace, on Facebook, and on this blog.  Unless it involves baseball.

braves win

GO BRAVES!!

Today, though.. a rare op-ed, as I climb up onto my soapbox.  And at the size I am right now, that’s no small task…

OK.  All jokes aside, tomorrow is Election Day in Omaha.  Voters have their first opportunity to narrow down the field of mayoral candidates, city council candidates, and Omaha School Board hopefuls.  But last week, Douglas County Election Commissioner Dave Phipps painted a dismal picture of what he expects on April 2.  He predicts voter turnout will be about 18%.

Read our March 28 story about Phipps’ predictions for the April Primary

18%?!?!?!?!?!

Here’s the math: of  274,321 registered voters, less than 50,000 will decide who moves on to May’s General Election.  Less than 18% will decide who shapes the public policy of our city for the next four years.  What happens regarding taxes, crime, roads, policy.  Less than 18% will determine who gets to decide on education for kids who attend OPS schools; how THEIR tax dollars are spent in the district.

Imagine being in a group of five people and letting one person decide how your money is spent, what you do, what will keep you safe, etc.  Are you willing to give up that power?

These numbers aren’t anything new.  For the primary election in 2009, Phipps says Omaha saw a 19% voter turnout.  Still, I am so surprised, and DUMBFOUNDED by these numbers.  As I’ve mentioned here before, we receive quite a few story ideas from our viewers, including A LOT of complaints or issues they need help with.  Don’t get me wrong–I’m a proud member of the Seven Can Help team and want to help if we can.  But folks, THIS IS YOUR CHANCE to make your voice heard!! THIS if your chance to help yourself, your community, your business, your loved ones!!  THIS is our process, a privilege our country was built upon!

‘I’m just too busy..’

I’m a working mom.  I get it.  BUT VOTING TAKES SO LITTLE TIME, AND IT IS SO IMPORTANT!  We MAKE time for so many things.. to stop for coffee on the way to work.. to get gas on the way home.. to meet that friend or coworker for lunch.  PLAN out a window of time, 15 minutes, to exercise your privilege!

‘I don’t know where to go..’

Click here  to figure out where your polling place is, what you need to bring, or to download a sample ballot.  All of the information you need is right at your fingertips.

‘I don’t know enough about the candidates..’

We truly believe in our slogan ‘More Complete Coverage’ and have done our very best to provide that to viewers in this (and every) election.  Click here to see how each of Omaha’s mayoral candidates responded to 7 questions from KETV.  You’ll also find links to all of the stories we’ve covered about the campaigns, the allegations and our investigations into the truth behind them, and the mayoral forums and debates that have taken place in the past few weeks.

‘I don’t like any of them.. I don’t like the negativity.’

Two of the people in each race, whether it’s for mayor or council or the school board, WILL MOVE ON whether you vote or not.  And you will have little room to complain if you didn’t try to make a difference while you had the chance.

I leave you with a thought before I step down off my soapbox (and by the way, I might need some help doing that..).  In January 2011, I was assigned to cover the effort by native Sudanese to form their own country, an independent South Sudan.  Omaha was one of 8 polling locations across the United States.  The weather was MISERABLE.. sleeting, damp, FREEZING.  But you’d never know it… because the THOUSANDS of people who showed up, by bus, by carpool, some WALKING, were joyous.  They were singing together.  They were smiling.  They were EXCITED.  THEY WERE ALLOWED TO VOTE.  Those thousands of people waited, in that freezing, wet cold for HOURS.. to MAKE THEIR VOICES HEARD.

Registration-for-South-Su-006

At least think about it.   As Americans, it is our privilege and responsiblity.

VOTE.

Polls open at 8am Tuesday!

Tick Tock, Tick Tock

“Evidently I’ve to go to Crib World, because it’s a whole world of cribs; I guess Crib City wasn’t big enough. Why isn’t there a store called This Is The Crib For You, and they just have one great crib and they deliver it and assemble it and help you raise your child?”

Amen, Miranda.  Amen.

I’ve been setting up stories this week and next, and just realized APRIL STARTS NEXT WEEK.

THEN IT’S MAY.

THEN IT’S JUNE.

(This is where Rob says, ‘Good job, Brandi!! You’ve mastered the calendar!’  Sigh…)

June means BABY!  Where has the time gone?!?!?

I feel like we have SO MUCH left to do to get ready for this little man.. a crib, painting his nursery, a new stroller for 2.. where to begin?!? I feel like time is just FLYING by!

AND, yes, we are still playing the Name Game.

Read my previous post, What’s In A Name?

THANK YOU so much to all of you who emailed, tweeted, and sent me messages over Facebook with suggestions!  Here are a few of my favorites..

lyndsey: Chipper?

(My favorite baseball player of all time.. but my husband is a huge Padres fan.  AND Chipper’s real name is Larry Wayne Jones, Jr.)

Maria: How about a name from one of the 6 movies since you’re a huge Star Wars fan?

(I actually LOVE the name Lucas.. but we’ve ruled it out..)

Wendy: Weston

(A good compliment to our Easton.. and also, the top suggestion from Papio Mayor David Black, the name of his grandson!)

OPD’S Helicopter Crew: Abel

(The crew’s code name is Able One.  Many votes of support on this one from the KETV News team.. 🙂 )

***

SOOOOO the Name Game continues.  Since my husband is a high school baseball coach, we should just let the team vote on a name, right?

(Ladies and gentlement.. we proudly introduce Baby Chalupa…)

Maybe at This Is The Crib For You they have a Perfect Name department, too. 🙂

Sliding Into Third

Disclaimer: I haven’t slid into third since I played elite softball as a kid.. the last time I tried I just kind of crumbled onto third base during a slow pitch game.. and I hurt myself.

So why the headline?  Because this week, Baby and I begin the third trimester of pregnancy!

WAIT.. WHAT?!?! How did this happen so quickly?!?!  I thought we had plenty of time to paint.. to choose a crib.. to prepare!  This pregnancy has simply FLOWN by, thanks to a healthy baby and some really good luck in having a smooth pregnancy!

Still, as any momma will back me up on (except for the REALLY lucky ones!) things are starting to get a little more uncomfortable.  And sometimes, you just need to talk to someone who knows and can share their pregnancy pains with you!  So it’s a good thing I’m in very good company…

THE WOMEN WHO DRANK THE WATER

jeff

Lauren Nathan, wife of my good friend Jeff Nathan.. due in May

kailyn

Former KETV reporter Kailyn (Reid) Watson.. due in June

mattie

My hair stylist extraordinaire Mattie Knihal.. due in August

cas

One of my best friends from high school, Cassie Lacey.. due in August

kylie

My friend and Omaha nurse Kylie Scheideler.. due in September

leanne

Fellow PLHS classmate and Omaha actress, Leanne Hill-Carlson.. due in October

That’s A LOT of friends, all pregnant at the same time!! It’s really great though.. because together we are a pool of endless resources for commiserating and comparing notes.

“I have a horrible cold.. anything you’ve tried that helps?”

“I’m so tired!! Any tricks that help with the other kiddos and/or give you energy at work?”

“Strollers!?! Help me!! Do you like the brand you got? Which ones are you looking at?”

And the biggest thing we can all discuss.. DRINKING THE HORRIBLE ORANGE WATER for the glucose test! Ugh.. it’s like drinking Shasta from a 2-liter bottle that’s been left open on the counter for a few days..

The BEST part of sharing this experience together is watching each little life enter the world, hearing each new name, and seeing each precious face.

Timing Is Everything

As journalists, we meet ALL KINDS of people and cover all kinds of stories.  There are days when we are shaking our heads and pulling our hair out because of the things we hear and see.  We cover some horrible things.. and there are times we start to question people in general.  And then.. you have a week like I just had and your faith is completely restored.. and then some.

Casey march 6

Thanks to Casey Charf for the photo!

I’ve been talking with Casey Charf for the last two weeks or so, first connecting with her just days after she was involved in a terrible car accident near Valley.  Casey and her best friend, Alle, both suffered broken backs and necks.  I interviewed Alle and her cousin, Connor Gourley, about the accident and their message to everyone to wear seat belts.  Casey couldn’t do an interview that day.. and I later found out she was already dealing with something we wouldn’t know about until Monday night.. that doctors, running tests after the crash, found a massive tumor near Casey’s kidney.  Casey’s body had been hiding cancer.

Click here to watch Monday night’s story with Casey

Casey is 18, GORGEOUS, and says she had no symptoms that anything was wrong.  Her cancer is called Malignant Pheochromocytoma, and there are only 1,000-1,500 people in the entire U.S. who have it.  Casey and her family agreed to talk us to and share their story because they were desperate for answers, desperate for support, desperate for Casey’s Cure.

Through a donation website, Casey’s friends and family helped raise $8,000 before our story aired Monday night.  Today, that fund has topped $40,000.

Our newsroom was inundated Tuesday with emails, messages and phone calls from survivors and doctors around the country, hoping they could offer Casey some hope.

Casey herself received messages over Facebook from strangers across the country, just to let her know they were thinking about her.

Click here to watch Tuesday night’s story, following up with Casey

Merely as the reporter sharing Casey’s story and just watching from the outside.. I am BLOWN AWAY by the generosity, caring and support I’ve seen in the last few days.  It is truly incredible.  When I walked in yesterday and opened my email account, I was near tears seeing email.. after email.. after email.. asking how they could help.  There are donors on her website, who gave $5 anonymously.. just to help her family in some way.  The doctor we interviewed Tuesday by phone, one of the nation’s leading experts on Casey’s cancer at the National Institutes of Health, is willing to see Casey immediately.

We’ll follow along with Casey every step of her journey.  Tonight at 10–we’re there as she speaks at her high school graduation, neck brace and all, inspiring even more people.

It’s so cliche.. but I can’t help but think of a quote from Anne Frank: “It’s really a wonder that I haven’t dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.

Casey’s story is PROOF of that.  There is so much good in people.  Thank you, Omaha and beyond, for sharing that.

A HUGE thank you to KETV photojournalist Ashley Nodgaard, my ‘other-half’ in sharing Casey’s story!!

What’s In A Name?

When someone sees I am pregnant, there are usually a few standard questions that follow.  When are you due, do you know what you’re having, and do you have any names picked out?

We know the answers to the first two questions (June and a little boy), but WE’VE GOT NOTHING for names.  Nadda. Nil. Zilch.

I’ve had some suggestions from my coworkers here at KETV.. even before we knew our baby’s gender.

**

Adrian: Bellatrix

Me: Adrian, this baby will neither be a Death Eater nor Voldemort’s sidekick..

**

Natalie: Harper.  That’s perfect.  I really think you should just go with that.

Andy: I’ve never seen a Harper that wasn’t cute.

**

Rob: You’ve already got an Easton.. how about Rawlings? Mizuno? Louisville?

Me: (no response. Shook head at Rob.)

**

Easton even offered a suggestion when I asked him what we should name his brother…

ALL DONE!

***

SOOO I’ve been hitting all the websites, looking for ideas.  Yesterday, one site suggested Templeton.

Me: (like the rat on Charlotte’s Web?!?!)

**

BUT TODAY, AN IDEA!!  The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is holding a Facebook contest to name these new babies..

IMG_4118 (1)

thanks to the Henry Doorly Zoo for the photo!

Like the Henry Doorly Zoo on Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/OmahaZoo?fref=ts, and next week (March 8-15) leave a comment with your name ideas for the two little boys and three little girls.  The lions’ keepers will choose the top 20 and then allow YOU to vote March 22-27.

Here’s my idea.. they only need 5 names, that leaves us 15 great suggestions to pick from!! We’ll just take one of those!

Me: (great.. so we’ll have an Easton and a Simba..)

SIGH.  Back to the drawing board…

This One’s For The Girls

IT’S FASHION! IT’S FASHION! (Project Runway fans.. flashback to when Santino sang that in the work room in Season 2, annoying his fellow designers… it still makes me laugh :))

Another Omaha Fashion Week is in the books and I had the great honor of emceeing Saturday night’s finale!  This is one of my FAVORITE events of the year to host, because my best friends and I make a girl’s night of it and hit the town!

fashion week

Thanks to Craig Lenihan and OmahaNightLife.com for the photo!

A few years ago, all of us going out together was the norm.  We’d sing our hearts out at karaoke, meet at Maria’s in Ralston to catch up over tacos, and of course, watch American Idol together every week!   Careers, weddings, and several kiddos later, it’s harder and harder to find time (and babysitters!)  to get together.  When we do, it is SOO good for the soul!  I think we all have those people in our lives that just KNOW us inside and out; we relate, we laugh, we’re uplifted just by being around each other.  These are my people 🙂

To ANYONE out there balancing work, family and the stresses of daily life, call your friends and plan a night out.  Even if it’s once a month.  Or once every six months!  It is so worth it 🙂

As for Fashion Week–what an AMAZING show on Saturday night!  I know absolutely nothing about fashion (I have a hard time making myself presentable for our newscasts most days..) but I love the transformation for the runway.  The hair, the makeup, the vision that goes into each designer’s collection is so cool to see.  I have such a neat perspective sitting backstage; I see the models line up quietly, sometimes giggling or whispering reassurances to one another.  Others are completely stoic, their eyes focusing on the spotlight in front of them that marks their entrance to the crowd.  But ALL of them, the second they turn that corner, JUST WORK IT.  They strut, they smile, they pose–and I LOVE every moment of it!  It’s such an incredible thing to see!

This is my third time hosting Omaha Fashion Week, but my FIRST emceeing on a night that featured Swim Wear.

I was absolutely blown away.  Not just by the fashion, but by the models.  I have such admiration and respect for people who have the self discipline and drive to eat right, exercise, and take care of their bodies.

Truth check.. I was also incredibly jealous of the models that, no doubt, stopped for ice cream on the way home and are just incredibly gifted physically 🙂  ESPECIALLY jealous being 6 months pregnant.  As I noted in this post, https://ketvanchorsaway.wordpress.com/2013/02/07/there-and-back-again-a-mommas-tale/, I am one of those lucky expecting mothers who gains weight EVERYWHERE, not just in my belly.  So when I saw THIS..

Pinterest For Preggos

Confession: I am an emotional hoarder.

It’s no secret I love history.  That is actually one of the things that pulled me to journalism; we get to tell stories about what is happening right now, things that all become the history of our community.  Collecting keepsakes and sorting through old photos falls right in line with that–telling stories about my history, and at least a part of the history of my friends and family.  It’s amazing how a simple message written on a sticky note can take you back to a moment in time.  How a photograph triggers laughs and memories from a day out or a great night with friends.  Now, I MAY take this to a clinically obsessive level with scrapbooking.. but hey, tomato tomahto, right? 🙂

Once I discovered Pinterest.. all hope was lost.  There are SO MANY amazing ideas for ways to preserve those memories.  For 2013, a year that will no doubt bring incredible moments for my family, here’s one of my favorites:

daily calendar

365+ Memories in a Box

Every day, use an index card to write one down one thing that happened on that date (noting the year).  These can be big events (the day we learned Baby #2 was a boy!) or seemingly unimportant things (we had a BIG snowstorm today!)  Next year, use the exact same cards to write new memories on each day.  Can you imagine how fun each card will be to look back on in 10 years?  LOVE THIS!!! Not only for the memories, but it’s so EASY and QUICK to take 3 minutes and jot down a simple note about the day (a MUCH more feasible option on those days when we barely have time to grab a cup of coffee!)

I may be WAY behind in my scrapbooking, but at least I know I’ve got a cool record of the day-to-day happenings of our little (soon to be bigger!) family.

A final note.. if I had my memory box six years ago, today’s entry would’ve been something like this:

Feb 28: Got to meet sweet baby Noah Ryan today!!

Noah is the oldest kiddo of one of my best friends, Melissa.  I CANNOT BELIEVE her little Batman is 6 years old today!!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NOAH!!

Finding Light

Last night, I cried watching a rerun of Grey’s Anatomy.  Don’t judge.

It was the episode where social services takes away Zola while trying to determine if Meredith and Derek are fit parents.  Watching that sweet baby girl playing with her ‘Daddy’s’ badge, then watching her ‘Mommy’ take her, kiss her face, and hand her off to a stranger.. it was just too much.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.. it’s just a TV show. (A FANTASTIC TV show!)  But in all seriousness, I cannot IMAGINE losing my sweet boy.  It’s so easy to take for granted every hug, every smell, every laugh, every smile.

The Thomas family will be the FIRST to tell you to never, EVER take any moment.. any single second.. for granted.

family

Thank you to Nick and Alesha Thomas for the photo

I first met Nick and Alesha Thomas when they were arguably going through one of the darkest times of their life; they had just lost their youngest child and only son, Lane, to SIDS.  They dropped their sweet 5-month-old baby off at daycare and never saw him alive again.

Just three months after Lane’s death, Nick and Alesha learned they were expecting again.  July 2012, they welcomed Asa Lane Thomas into the world and into their family.

To all parents reading this, do you remember how hard those first few months were as a new mom or dad.. not ever sure you were doing the right thing?  Imagine how Nick and Alesha lived day to day after bringing Asa home.. afraid to ever let him out of their sight, afraid to ever shut their eyes and sleep when he slept, afraid to ever trust anyone again.

Monday night at 10, the Thomas’s share their story of HOW they are doing it–how they are raising another baby after losing one to SIDS.  Their message is clear in both words and actions; that while they will NEVER forget the little boy they lost, Asa has brought back a little bit of joy into their lives. (And he’ll make you smile, too–he is SO DARN CUTE!!! 🙂  They give so much hope to anyone who has lost a child; that there is still light in the midst of so much dark.

I wish the Thomas’s all the happiness in the world; they are such kind people, and they absolutely deserve it after everything they’ve been through.  I hope you tune in for their story TOMORROW NIGHT (MONDAY) AT 10!

A Perfect Day

I’ve had an absolutely AMAZING week.  How often do we say that? How often SHOULD we say that?  AMAZING 🙂

This week, I turned 32.  (NOT 48, thank you very much, John Oakey 🙂  Wednesday was one of those magical days where the fabulous moments just kept on coming. Several times, I was near tears, just overwhelmed by the kindness and caring from EVERYONE from my coworkers, to my friends, to our viewers.

THANK YOU, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who remembered me and took a few seconds (or more!) to help make my day so special.

To my amazing friends at KETV, THANK YOU for the gifts, cards and for ordering me Star Wars cupcakes!!! (And FYI.. everyone eats like they’re pregnant on my birthday!! RULE! 🙂
